The Cloister Wienhausen
Only a few kilometres away: the cloister Wienhausen. Founded originally as a Cistercian cloister in 1231, it is the most significant, preserved, mediaeval, gothic brick building complex in northern Germany. Sights to see here are the wonderfully painted nun-choir and the collection of precious scenic carpets. These treasures, preserved in their old condition from the 14th and 15th centuries were made by nuns in a so-called cloister-stitch and are as famous as the Bayeux Tapestry.
